Advertising the Fergus(s)ons

Without a fair bit of online advertising one gets nowhere, nowadays. The internet is the marketplace of the 21st century, whether we like it or not. So I threw up three ads about our Fergus(s)on websites, in order to attract visitors, registered users and, hopefully, one or two new Clan Society members.

The first ad is for our new international Clannfhearghuis Network, which is intended to be a relaxed meeting place for us all.

The second ad takes people to this very Not the Clan Fergusson Society website that you’ve got on your screen right now.

The third ad carries its visitors straight to the Clan Fergus(s)on Society, home and haven of us all, in the hope that it will boost the membership a bit.

“But where do those ads appear?” you may now ask. That’s at Trafficswarm, a so-called “traffic exchange” where people do… eh… exchange traffic, or something like that. During my years on the internet I have been doing quite a bit of advertising there, and recently I took a “Pro” account that, although it costs money which makes my Scottish and my Dutch blood curdle, offers the possibility of placing many more ads than a free account does, enabling me to throw the above ads into the mix. If you happen to be interested in online advertising or being online advertised to, click the banner below and have a look.

On the status of Clan Society members

Every now and then I snoop around on the websites of other Clan Societies to see what the lot is up to, which usually is not much, if any, good. I mean, they have fine intentions and undoubtedly they’re doing their best – but they aren’t Fergus(s)ons. So what can one, indeed what should one, expect (wide grin)?!

Recently I visited a Clan Society site (I honestly forgot which) that stated on its information page something along the lines of “Clan Society membership does not make you a member of the Clan”. I sighed, and surfed on. Because if there’s anything, anything at all that membership of a Clan Society does, it is making you a member of the Clan! This is not individually decided by the various Clan Societies, but centrally by the highest authority on these matters: the Lyon Court.

As an Officer of the Lyon Court Sir Crispin Agnew of Lochnaw, Baronet, QC, Rothesay Herald of Arms, wrote in one of the Court’s information pamphlets:

“(…) All persons who bear the chief’s surname are deemed to be members of his clan. Equally, it is generally accepted that someone who determines to offer their allegiance to the chief shall be recognised as a member of that clan unless the chief has decreed that he will not accept such a person’s allegiance, Thus, if a person offers his allegiance to a particular chief by joining his clan society or by wearing his tartan, he can be deemed to have elected to join that particular clan and should be viewed as a member of that clan unless the chief particularly states that he or his name group are not to be allowed to join the clan (…)”

The Lord Lyon has spoken on the matter, and the only person who can unspeak it is the Chief of the Clan, in our case Sir Charles Fergusson of Kilkerran. Unless Sir Charles says: “No!”, as a member of our Society you are a Fergus(s)on Clans(wo)man! And I don’t really think that we all need to sit nervously next to the mailbox waiting for the fatal envelope printed with the Kilkerran crest… (wide grin)!
